It is a phantom thief action/psychological thriller anime TV series animated by TMS_Entertainment. It ran from April 4, 2012 to June 27, 2012. It is unique amongst the Lupin iii franchise for being directed and written by women, Yamamoto_Saya and Okada Mari respectively. This series is the start of the Koike_Takeshi Lupin III prequel subseries which star the non-Lupin members of Lupin's crew as the protagonists although Lupin himself remains a major character. Koike acted as the character designer and animation director for this series, but ascended to becoming the director in its follow-ups. This series, as well as the Koike sequels, aim for a more adult audience, being much darker, more violent, and more sexual, than all preceding Lupin III anime installments. In terms of tone, aesthetics, and characterization, this series is more faithful to Monkey Punch's original manga. Like the main series, the soundtrack was composed by a musician known for jazz music, Kikuchi Naruyoshi, but Kikuchi opts for a more chaotic sound to the music and doesn't use any of the recurring leitmotifs composed by the franchise's standard composer, Ohno Yuuji. Watanabe Shinichiro, most famous for directing Cowboy Bebop which was inspired by the Lupin III franchise, acts as the music producer. The series stars Mine Fujiko as its protagonist and follows her early adventures prior to becoming part of Lupin's crew and is set in a time period that is an amalgamation of the late 20th century. It centers around the question of who Mine Fujiko really is, delving more into her psyche. It also provides an origin story for the regular Lupin III cast, showing how their relationship dynamics came to be. The series starts off episodic, but, with each caper Mine is involved in, she finds out that they have ties to both her past and a larger conspiracy. The series was critically and financially successfully, with the anime winning the New Face Award at the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2012 and the Blu-ray release reaching Top 9 on Oricon charts with 2802 copies.
