A comedy/drama sequel to the comedy manga Shonan Junai Gumi and the most well known installment of Fujisawa_Tooru's Onizuka series as well as Fujisawa's most popular work. The original manga debuted on May 16, 1997, and ended on April 17, 2002. It has received a very popular live action TV adaptation in 1998 and an anime adaptation and received a second live action adaptation in 2012. Out of all of Fujisawa's work, this manga has launched the most spinoffs and sequels. It has received a side story called GTO: Shonan 14 Days and a direct sequel titled GTO: Paradise Lost. Onizuka Eikichi is a former teen delinquent has just graduated from college, but is uncertain about what he wants to do in life. He decides to become a teacher, initially to pick up attractive girls, but after a brief stint as a substitute teacher, he finds himself changing some of the students' lives for the better. He decides to take the job more seriously and becomes a full time teacher at a private school called Holy Forest Academy. Unfortunately for him, he is in charge of the most rebellious class in the whole school, which has a history of driving teachers away. To make things worse, some of his coworkers do not like his unorthodox and audacious methods of solving problems and are suspicious of him due to his background. Despite these setbacks, Onizuka is undeterred and is determined to become a great teacher his own way and help the students solve their various problems. The series frequently alternates between over the top raunchy comedy and inspirational drama. While the manga and its various adaptations have the same general premise, each incarnation of the series has quite a few differences. The 1998 TV series and 1999 anime were both made before the manga concluded and both adaptations come up with a unique ending for the series. The 2012 series, made a decade after the manga concluded, adapts portions of the manga that were not in previous adaptations including sidestory Shonan 14 Days. Fujisawa was inspired by the work of Tsuka Kouhei. One of the recurring themes of the series is the conflict between teachers and students with each side being unable to relate to the other. This was inspired by Fujisawa's experience as a student. As a student, Fujisawa disliked how his teachers seemed to care more about crafting a good performance record that will make the teachers and school 'look good' as opposed to actually caring about their students' well-being. This dislike is reflected in the series where one of the main recurring flaws the adult characters suffer from is obsession with personal social status to the detriment of forming meaningful human relations with others. Fujisawa, however, enjoyed mathematics thanks to having a more interesting teacher teach said subject. Fujisawa intended Onizuka to be someone who will bridge the gap between students and teachers. Fujisawa originally intended the series to run for 10 volumes, but his editors asked him to extend the series. This gave him quite a bit of difficulty as he found it harder to come up with characters to write and draw about. He often solved his writer's block by temporarily shifting the focus of the story away from Onizuka.
