Refers to images referencing this specific Final_Fantasy game. It is a Japanese RPG developed by Squaresoft and released in 1997 for the Playstation 1. It is also available on the Playstation Network. It is directed by Kitase Yoshinori, produced by Sakaguchi Hironobu, and features character designs by Nomura_Tetsuya, the first game Nomura was head character designer for and he was selected to be the designer because the staff felt that his characters would translate better to 3D. Music is composed by Uematsu Nobuo. The story was written by Nojima Kazushige, Nomura Tetsuya, Sakaguchi Hironobu, Kitase Yoshinori, and Kato Masato. However, the final product is predominantly written by Nojima and Kitase, based off of the concepts introduced by Sakaguchi and Nomura. Kato was brought onboard later during production and only wrote a few scenes. The main artist for the Final Fantasy series until this game, Amano Yoshitaka, helped design the world map, but he was not able to be as directly involved in character design as he was before because he was busy opening art workshops and exhibitions in France and New York.

While it was not the first Final Fantasy game to be localized outside of Japan, it was the first one to become a massive hit, not only in Japan, but outside of it and the success of this game has guaranteed the localizations of most subsequent Final Fantasy entries. It was also the first Final Fantasy game to be released in Europe. It is also often credited with popularizing Japanese RPGs amongst North American gamers. Due to the game finding widespread success internationally, it is one of the best selling games in the Final Fantasy franchise, selling 10 million copies worldwide by May 2010.

Due to the game's iconic status, many plot points in the game are well known and often not spoiler tagged so anyone who has yet to experience the game and wants to be unspoiled should be advised not to look up any more information online.

While the game still features a lot of fantasy elements with magic being prevalent, it broke away from previous games by having a science fiction setting and the game's story even begins in a gritty cyberpunk inspired city. It is also the first to utilize 3d graphics in both gameplay and cutscenes.

Cloud Strife has joined with rebel group AVALANCHE led by Barret Wallace to raid Mako reactors owned by the Shinra corporation in the city of Midgar. Barret passionately hates Shinra and the Mako reactors because they drain the planet's resources and for more personal reasons. Cloud, however, is a mercenary only working with AVALANCHE for the money and doesn't care much for Barret's cause. One Mako reactor raid goes wrong and the reactor explodes. When Cloud comes to, he discovers he is in the city's slums and meets flower seller Aerith Gainsborough who introduces herself to him.

Aerith is not just an ordinary flower seller and is actually the last of a group of people known as the Cetra who have a special connection to the planet. The president of Shinra wants to capture her and believes that she can lead him to a promised land where he can get all the Mako energy he wants. Cloud agrees to protect her from the Shinra corporation which launches an escalating battle with AVALANCHE. However, Cloud and co. soon discover that there is a threat far greater than Shinra and its minions, a threat that is related to Cloud's past and can endanger the entire planet. . .

The game was in the planning stages during 1994, but production was halted due to many staff members being busy with Chrono Trigger. In Sakaguchi's original idea for FFVII, the game would have taken place in 1990s New York. This idea would instead be used for Square's next major JRPG, Parasite Eve. The character Edea, a major character in FFVIII's storyline and who Nomura designed before this game was developed, was omitted from this game and used in FFVIII instead. The game was the most expensive game of its time, costing $45 million US dollars, equivalent of $64 million Us dollars in 2012. The developers spent a lot of time working on the 3D effects and director Kitase felt that Final Fantasy had to make the jump to 3D or the franchise would risk being seen as behind the times.

The game's immense success led to it receiving direct continuations in the 2000s making the Final Fantasy VII a sub series within the larger Final Fantasy franchise. The CG movie Advent Children is set two years after the game. Dirge of Cerberus is a sequel that stars supporting character and optional party member Vincent Valentine. Some of the key characters in the game also appear in the Kingdom Hearts series which character designer Nomura Tetsuya directed. The game Crisis Core is a prequel that stars Zack Fair. Its characters also made their first fighting game appearance in Ehrgeiz and were later included in the Final Fantasy crossover fighting game Dissidia. Cloud is also playable in Super Smash Bros. 4, the first time Final Fantasy has been represented in the series.

The game was remade for the PS4 in 2020 with original director Kitase acting as producer and Nomura and Hamaguchi Naoki directing instead. The remake notably drops the turn based battle system in favor of a real time format and emphasizes open-world exploration.
