It ran from October 3, 1982-June 26, 1983 and was directed by Ishiguro Noboru and written by Matsuzaki Kenichi. The Mechs were designed by Kawamori Shoji, who went on to work on every Macross series except Macross II, and Miyatake Kazutaka. Kawamori also came up with the concept of the series and the franchise as a whole. Music is composed by Haneda Kentarou. Character designs are by Mikimoto_Haruhiko. One day, a gigantic city sized mech crash lands on Earth. No one knows where it came from, but the military organization UN Spacy decides to reverse engineer it so that humans can use it and dubs it the SDF-1 Macross. Ten years after the mech's crash landing Ichijou Hikaru and his ace pilot friend Roy Fokker are observing the mech's launch ceremony when an army of humanoid giants known as the Zentraedi suddenly attack. In the ensuing battle and confusion, the SDF-1 Macross gets launched into space and Ichijou Hikaru gets his first battle experience piloting a VF-1 Valkyrie. He manages to rescue a teen girl named Lynn Minmay and the two of them manage to make it to the SDF-1 Macross where the Valkyrie crash lands. While the two of them are in the deepest recesses of the giant mech, Hikaru falls in love with Minmay and she seems to reciprocate, but after the two of them are found by the Macross crew members Hikaru begins to feel uncertain about Minmay's feelings towards him as he observes her subsequent behavior. Hikaru becomes an official pilot for the military and is placed on the front lines, but the war against the Zentraedi is not going well. The Zentraedi have built their entire culture around the military and they show themselves to be generally superior in combat. But things begin to turn around after Hikaru and officer Hayase Misa are captured. The Zentraedi suspect that humans may be what they call Protoculture, the creators of the Zentraedi. They are curious about humanity's culture and have also miniaturized several of their members to go undercover to spy on humanity. After the Zentraedi witness Hikaru and Misa demonstrating a kiss to show the Zentraedi how human relationships work, the Zentraedi are shocked by this behavior which seems alien to them. At the same time, Lynn Minmay becomes an idol singer and not only does she become popular amongst humans, but also becomes useful for the war effort as the Zentraedi are completely overwhelmed once they hear her music as they have never experienced anything like it. The Zentraedi grow less unified as some become fascinated with humanity's way of life and sympathetic towards humans while others violently reject humanity and its 'Protoculture'. For Hikaru, things grow more complicated. On top of participating in numerous life and death battles against a powerful enemy, his relationship issues continue to worsen as he finds himself developing feelings for Misa who begins to reciprocate, but at the same time, he finds it hard to let go of Minmay. . . The series proved to be highly successful, much more so than the creators had anticipated. This popularity led to a nine more episodes being produced that function as an extended epilogue to the series after episode 27's climax. Its combination of action, romantic angst, and music set the tone and format for its sequels. The series also had a notably different take on alien invasion stories with the alien Zentraedi race being portrayed in a humanized fashion and making the conflict between humans and aliens less black and white. It was also dubbed in English and released in North America as the first story arc of the mecha anime mash up series Robotech, which became popular in its own right. It is the most well known and well regarded story arc of Robotech. The series also launched the career of Iijima_Mari who played Lynn Minmay and also sang her songs. However, she chose to focus on singing so Lynn Minmay is the only voice acting role that Iijima performed. She is one of the few voice actors to reprise the role for a non Japanese language dub; ADV did another English language dub and localization in 2006 and Iijima once again voiced Minmay, this time in English. It was remade into a 1984 anime movie called Macross:_Do_You_Remember_Love? which is also considered to be an in-universe film adaptation of the TV series' storyline.
