In the first game, you play as a security guard, later revealed to be named Mike Schmidt, who gets an ostensibly simple job as a night security guard at a pizzeria named Freddy Fazbear's Restaurant that is known for its use of animatronic endoskeletons made up as cute animal mascot characters, but as soon as Schmidt begins his job, he finds that Freddy Fazbear's Restaurant is not the family friendly place it purports to be. Said animatronics are able to move on their own, but they're only allowed to do so at night thanks to an infamous incident where someone lost their frontal lobe during the day. Furthermore, when the animatronics encounter a human at night, they assume that the human is an out of costume endoskeleton and will proceed to correct this 'mistake' by stuffing the human into an animal costume that is clearly not designed for humans to wear, gruesomely killing them. Schmidt's job is to spend 5 nights watching over the animatronics, keeping track of their movements via security cameras, and make sure they don't grab ahold of him. The franchise has a minimalist gameplay style. The game is played from a first person perspective. The player's only objective is to prevent the animatronics from reaching the player. The moment they reach the player is an instant game over. The player has no combat abilities and no mobility besides looking at the cameras, turning on lights, and opening and closing doors. However, resource management is very important as the player only has a limited amount of electricity to work with. The franchise itself was inspired by failure, Cawthon's previous games were met with heavy criticism, especially Chipper and Sons Lumber Co. The designs featured in said game, which were supposed to be cute and appealing, were criticized for coming off as creepy and unnatural. The harsh criticism deeply discouraged Cawthon to the point that he seriously contemplated quitting making video games. Ultimately, he decided to try to make one last game and build a game around the most common criticism he received of his designs. Five Nights at Freddy's became Cawthon's breakthrough game and was the start of an popular indie game franchise. The franchise has also inspired a novel titled Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes, written by Cawthon and Kira Breed-Wrisley. The franchise is also known for its fast release schedule, with four canon entries produced within the span of 2 years.
