Now Viewing: macross_plusTag type: Copyright マクロスプラス Tag refers to images referencing this Macross installment. It is the first canon sequel to choujikuu_yousai_macross, ignoring Macross II. Unlike the space opera narratives of the Macross TV series, this OVA is a comparatively smaller scale mecha action romance story. It was animated by Triangle_Staff and ran from August 25, 1994 to June 25, 1995. It was remade as a compilation film in 1995 called Macross Plus: Movie Edition, which faithfully follows the original story, but features some new animation. It actually premiered within the same year and ran concurrently with the Macross 7 TV series, which is set a few years after this one but is otherwise stand alone. It was directed by Kawamori_Shoji who focused more on this OVA than Macross 7. This OVA was created by a staff that would go on to frequently work together. Sharing directing duties with Kawamori is Watanabe Shinichiro, directing an anime that heavily involves music, one of his biggest passions. The story was written by Nobumoto Keiko, and the score was composed by Kanno Yoko in her major breakthrough as an anime composer, establishing her ability to write music in a diverse array of genres. Kanno's orchestral pieces were performed by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra while the songs she wrote for Apple were performed by artists including Kanno herself, Arai Akino, Yamane Mai, Melodie Sexton, Wuyontana and the Raiché Coutev Sisters. Watanabe, Kanno, and Nobumoto would go on to make Cowboy Bebop together and Kanno would become a go-to composer for both Kawamori and Watanabe. This OVA was also the last Macross work to involve the creator of Macross' trademark Itano_circuses, Itano_Ichirou, who was the main action animator, and this OVA features the most elaborate Itano circuses of his career. The characters were designed by Masayuki. The OVA is set three decades after the big war between humanity and Zentraedi. Human pilot Isamu Dyson and mixed Zentraedi/human Guld Goa Bowman are selected as test pilots as part of a search for to find a successor to the VF-11 Thunderbolt fighter plane/mech. However, the two of them have a deep personal grudge against each other that threatens to derail the tests. Their grudge centers around Myung Fang Long, their mutual childhood friend and love interest. After an incident that sparked the bitter feud between the two men, the trio have drifted apart, but are now reunited under these tense circumstances. Myung is now a music producer who's behind the galaxy's most popular idol, Sharon Apple. Sharon is not actually a human, but an AI program/virtual idol that uses Myung as her base. Isamu and Guld bitterly compete against each other to prove both who's the better pilot and to resolve their personal grievances with each other. At the same time, Myung finds that Sharon's AI is going beyond her programming and is not satisfied with just being a top singer . . . As research for the OVA, the crew visited Edwards Air Force Base in California, USA, and participated in training sessions. Their research there inspired the setting and the OVA's action sequences which place stronger emphasis on one on one dogfights.
