Originally a laid back manga by Amano_Kozue, about apprentice gondoliers on Martian canals. The manga was originally titled Aqua. It started in 2001 and went for ten chapters underneath that name. When the series switched magazines, it was retitled Aria, and it ran under that name from November 10, 2002 to April 2008. The series received a brief sequel chapter titled Special Navigation Aquaria as well as a sequel OVA titled Aria the Avvenire. The anime adaptation covered the story up to manga's conclusion, but has continued to follow up on the story past the original manga's conclusion/sequel chapter with a 2021 movie titled Aria the Crepuscolo, and a 2022 installment titled ARIA the Benedizone. It has been adapted into anime by Hal_Filmmaker in 2005, which spanned multiple TV series plus a few OVAs. The anime is written and directed by Sato Junichi. Music is composed and performed by the Choro Club and Senoo Takashi. Working on an anime series soundtrack was a new experience for said composers. Instead of giving them plot points to build their music on, Sato only gave them abstract themes and they had to build their soundtrack to convey said abstract ideas. The musicians themselves also make a cameo in the anime. Characters were designed by Koga_Makoto.

It is set in the early 24th century. Mars has been colonized and terraformed and a Venice inspired harbor city has been created there called Neo Venezia. The city is famous for its beauty and for its Undines, female gondola rowers and tour guides. Mizuhashi Akari has left Earth, called Man-Home in the series, to pursue a potential career as an Undine at Neo Venezia. She joins the Aria company to train underneath the tutelage of the popular Undine Alicia Florence. Once there, she befriends fellow trainee Undines, Aika Granzschesta and Alice Carroll. As she gains experience as an Undine, Akari experiences the sights and sounds of Neo-Venezia and forms special memories both individually and with her friends.

While it has some more melancholic and contemplative chapters, the series is very life-affirming and optimistic in tone with no antagonists. Creator Amano Kozue has stated in an afterword that she created the series in order to inspire people to appreciate the smaller things in life and not overly fixate on their failures. Many chapters are dedicated to fleshing out the setting of Neo-Venezia which often involve either the more experienced characters informing newcomer Akari about the world or Akari discovering interesting things by herself and, whenever possible, sharing her memorable experiences with her friends. Amano also stated in an afterward that writing the series made her pay more attention to the four seasons. She created a unique 24 month calendar for the series that follows Mars's orbital period of 668.6 days.

As the setting is modeled after Venice, many locations in the series have real world counterparts in the real Venice. The Aria Company is based off of a vaporetto shop in Venice while the Himeya Company is modeled after the Danieli Hotel. The animators went to Venice to do research on the environments and observe gondola rowing. The production company also supplied the seiyuu copies of the manga out of their own pockets as opposed to having the seiyuu purchase the manga themselves so that the seiyuu could better prepare for their characters.

Sato Junichi, who directed the anime adaptation, was inspired to create more relaxing slice of life series after working on Aria and since working on Aria, has become heavily involved in the productions of quite a few calm slice of life anime. He created a spiritual successor series called Tamayura which is also a relaxing slice of life series that features Hazuki Erino (Mizunashi Akari in Aria) in a supporting role.

The series was quite successful and became one of Amano's most popular works. The manga sold 4 million copies by 2009 and the first two seasons of the anime sold over 300,000 DVDs by June 2007.

The letter A features prominently in the series, both in its title and in the names of its characters.
