It debuted in 1994 and was created to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Gundam franchise. It is directed by Imagawa Yasuhiro who also worked on Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still. The story is written by Gobu Fuyunori. Character designs are done by Osaka_Hiroshi. Music is composed by Tanaka Kouhei. It has been adapted into a light novel written by Suzuki Yoshitake and multiple manga. The 2010 manga adaptation is handled by two of the creators of the original anime. It is written by Imagawa himself and illustrated by Shimamoto_Kazuhiko. The series is unusual among Gundam series in that its emphasis is not on war. It is also more of a super robot series with a heavy martial arts influence unlike the rest of the franchise and the original Gundam, which is generally credited as the first 'real robot' series. This shift to a comparatively more lighthearted storyline was inspired by the, at the time, dwindling popularity of the Gundam franchise. The sponsors mandated a reboot of the Gundam franchise with this series and aim for a younger target audience to increase toy Gundam sales. Director Imagawa became more supportive of these massive changes once he saw how complex some of the Gundam toys were. He decided that he should give this Gundam series its own unique style and not worry about comparing it to other Gundam shows. As he put it in an interview featured on Otaku USA, "This is my Gundam [. . .] And I've made a Gundam I can be proud of." The staff also used films from all over the world as inspiration for this series. Hong Kong wuxia movies, in particular, were a big influence on this series. The alternate name of Master Asia, "東方不敗 Undefeated of the East) is taken from the 1992 film adaptation (starring Jet Li) of the iconic Jin Yong wuxia novel 笑傲江湖. The series is notable for its over the top action, hot blooded tone, and featuring some of the most outlandish mecha designs in the franchise with the mechs reflecting the nationalities of their pilots. It is set in a world where the Federation, a group of colonies that correspond to Earth's nations, has decided to stage Gundam tournaments instead of waging war. Representatives around the globe participate in this tournament every four years. The winner's nation is given the power to control the government. The Japanese protagonist Domon Kasshu, accompanied by his love interest/assistant Rain Mikamura, decides to participate in this tournament, but he is more concerned with searching for his missing brother Kyoji who has stolen the immensely powerful Devil Gundam from the Neo-Japan government.
