The original light novels were written by Yamaguchi Noboru and illustrated by Usatsuka Eiji. The novels debuted on June 25, 2004. Unfortunately, Yamaguchi died on April 4, 2013 at the age of 41 after struggling for two years with cancer, leaving the series unfinished. However, artist Usatsuka has teamed up with writer Shimizu Yuu to revive the series on February 25, 2016 and give it a proper conclusion with two final volumes, following outlines laid out by Yamaguchi before his untimely passing. The novels finally concluded on February 24, 2017. It was adapted into four seasons of anime by JC Staff and has also received a manga and game adaptations. Hiraga Saito is a normal Japanese teenage boy who finds himself suddenly being dragged into a medieval Europe inspired world called Halkeginia. He finds himself in Tristain Academy which trains mages. He is disoriented because he can't communicate with the people there because they speak a different language. He was actually summoned there by accident by the seemingly incompetent mage Louise Valliere while she and the other students were summoning familiars. Louise wants to redo the summoning, but she is forced to accept Saito as a familiar and makes a contract with him by kissing him on the lips. Louise also tries to shut him up with a silence spell but even that backfires as she ends up giving him the ability to understand the language of the people of Halkeginia and communicate with them. Louise and Saito are stuck with each other and become sources of ridicule by Louise's peers. Louise and Saito often clash with each other as well, but both of them share a determination to prove themselves in front of their peers. Along the way, both of them discover their hidden talents, earn the respect of their peers and in Saito's case the romantic affections of various women, fall in love with each other, and become more heavily involved with more serious conflicts that can affect the entire world. The series was very successful and also contributed to solidifying Louise's seiyuu Kugimiya_Rie as a popular choice for tsundere characters. The anime also reunited the main seiyuus of Shakugan no Shana, Kugimiya Rie and Hino_Satoshi, who once again play the main couple.
