Now Viewing: cat's_eyeTag type: Copyright キャッツアイ Iconic action crime/heist series created by Houjou_Tsukasa and his first major success. The original manga sold over 18 million copies. The manga debuted in 1981 and concluded in 1985. It was adapted into an anime TV series in 1983, a live action TV special in 1988, and a live action film in 1997, which features a brief animated opening where the Kisugi sisters are redesigned to look like their actresses in the movie. The manga has also been remade in 2010. The remake manga is written by Nakameguro Sakura and drawn by Asai_Shin. It debuted on October 25, 2010 and is still ongoing. It has also been unofficially adapted into a hentai OVA in 1985 called Cat's Ai: Milky Girl. During daytime, the Kisugi sisters (Hitomi, Rui, and Ai) work at a cafe called Cat's Eye and function as normal citizens, but at night they become the famous leotard wearing thieves, collectively known as Cat's Eye, who specialize in stealing artwork. Their skills at stealing are so good that they are still able to get away with their heists even when they announce their next crime and their identities remain unknown. Hitomi's boyfriend Utsumi Toshio has been assigned to catch the thieves but not only has he yet to succeed, he also does not realize that Hitomi is part of Cat's Eye and is using some of the information he provides to help pull off Cat's Eye's heists. Despite being criminals, the Kisugi sisters are stealing art that had one point been owned by their father Michael Heinz who has mysteriously disappeared. The sisters hope that their heists will get them closer to finding out what became of their father. The series' leotard wearing protagonists are among the most well-known female thieves in anime/manga and they are often homaged and parodied. The series was not only popular in Japan but also in Europe. The anime series features multiple pop songs both in English and Japanese like the song Dancing with the Sunshine which has an all English and Japanese version (the latter still has a few English expressions). The anime's theme song is particularly iconic and has also been dubbed in multiple languages. The French animated series Totally Spies is strongly inspired by Cat's Eye with the character Alex having a strong similarity to Kisugi Ai who was called Alexia in the French dub of Cat's Eye. Houjou Tsukasa has made quite a few references to the series in his next series City Hunter with Ryo getting involved with a leotard wearing female thief reminiscent of the Kisugi sisters and the presence of a cafe called Cat's Eye. Ryou also has a fetish for leotards and gets excited whenever an attractive woman wears one. However, City Hunter is not in the same continuity as Cat's Eye.
