Now Viewing: angry_video_game_nerd_(series)Tag type: Copyright Tag refers to the online comedic video game review series. The eponymous character is tagged angry_video_game_nerd. It is a video sketch comedy/review series created by James_Rolfe who also plays the eponymous character. The series is credited with popularizing the comedic video review genre. The series generally depicts the Angry Video Game Nerd, a hot tempered and very foul-mouthed bespectacled nerd who is stuck in the past, reviewing a game or a console from his extensive library. The games and consoles are predominantly from the 1980s and 1990s and occasionally the 1970s. The games he reviews almost always turn out to be terrible and the Nerd gets increasingly furious as he slogs through the game. The Nerd often expresses his anger with a lot of curse words and even invents new curse words by combining two pre-existing ones together or uses established curse words in unorthodox ways like his famous "This game is ass!" He also tends to make a lot of scatological references. To make his life more miserable, sometimes characters from the games he plays will show up to harass him. Although the series is set in the 2000s-2010s, the Nerd himself is stuck in the past, predominantly playing games and consoles from the 20th century as well as making pop cultural references to works from said century. He seems to be confused the few times he plays games and consoles from the 21st century. The series also has a tradition of having a special Halloween episode as Rolfe is a major fan of horror movies. These episodes will often have darker horror movie inspired lighting and involve the Nerd reviewing a horror themed video game. Despite the caustic nature of the Nerd's criticisms, the series is also meant to be a parody of easily angered video game players and many of the Nerd's complaints are mostly exaggerated and in some cases, the Nerd concedes that the game he just played isn't really that bad. James Rolfe, his creator and actor, is also much calmer and nicer than the character so the Nerd is not necessarily meant to represent him. The series' success turned James Rolfe into an Internet celebrity. It was also a very unexpected success. The first two videos were made in 2004 and were much less elaborate than the later videos. They were made for the amusement of himself and his friends and he did not post them online until 2006. After he did so, they became surprisingly popular and inspired him to turn the Angry Video Game Nerd into a full blown series. The enormous popularity of the series and the support of fans has enabled him to make a upcoming feature length film around the eponymous character. The series has also received a video game adaptation called AVGN Adventures. Rolfe's friends also contribute to the series, often by playing various supporting characters. The series theme song is performed by Kyle Justin who also plays the Guitar Guy. Mike Matei draws the opening images and plays many of the supporting roles although his face is never seen in the main series. While many of the games and accessories are ones Rolfe already owns, some of them are donated by his fans. His videos have also been translated into Japanese and uploaded on sites like Nico Nico Douga. He also makes an unvoiced cameo in the anime The Unlimited Hyobu Kyousuke.
