I thought this was what happened if Gary dies and Ib goes to meet Mary herself but gets stabbed before she could burn Mary's painting. It could just be that Mary just regrets killing Ib since she just assumes you came to kill her. Hell, I wish there was an ending where you accepted Mary if it was possible to alter Mary's fate like you can with Gary's.
