Ah this is when I actually enjoyed watching the anime; before shippuden. They ruined it by turning it into a melodrama completely about an emo man-child with relationship issues...

Ah, the good old days. I completely agree with anon1. While I can't stand Naruto Shippuuden, I'll always have a soft spot for everything that came before (bar the fillers after the Sasuke rescue arc), and this picture perfectly describes why.
