Gay D&D changed Kobold to draconian which made absolutely no sense, rather than just making some draconian minor race. Kobolds were originally like shapeshifting sprites or more easily described as "familiars" based on German lore.

It's a lot of sense for Kobolds typically to be canine in nature as dogs love to dig, and Kobolds are associated with mines.
