The military style school_uniform for male students in middle schools and high schools in Japan, usually in either black or navy.

The top has a standing collar buttoning down from top-to-bottom. Pants are straight leg and a black or dark-colored belt is worn with them.

Gakuran with long jackets (up to the knee or below) and high collars (as worn by ouendan and banchous) are called chouran (長ラン). Even longer gakuran are called youran (洋ラン). It is common for youran to have long jackets, high collars, plus side/back slits, satin embroidery on the inside and/or with clothes_writing (similar to tokkoufuku).
