Posted on: 05/18/12 02:41PM Well, the thing is, the Terms of Service aren't there to make it so that we don't see these things, but rather to prohibit them from being put on the site at all. Images that violate our Terms of Service are images that we don't want to expend disk space, processor power, and bandwidth to host.
Automatically blacklisting the things that are currently violations of our Terms of Service would be sensible if our rules were in place to shield the community from them, but they are not. Gelbooru is a website with a specific and targeted Japanese theme. Posts that don't fit within this theme don't belong on the site. The analogy I like to use is one where we take a museum as a representative of the internet, and a specific exhibit as a representative of a website. If a museum has an exhibit on Ukiyoe art, you wouldn't expect to find French Impressionistic art in it, would you? Similarly, the theme of Gelbooru is Japan. art. On a site whose explicit theme is Japan, things that are not related to Japan do not belong. tl;dr auto-blacklist wouldn't be an acceptable solution However, recently our Terms of Service has been altered. While artwork by non-Japanese artists is still against the rules, the moderation team is capable of giving exception to artwork by non-Japanese artists given that it fits the Japanese theme (I.E, it's artwork based on a Japanese copyright or something similar) and it's high quality (quality standards are slightly higher than for Japanese artists). For all intents and purposes, any non-Japanese artists whose artwork doesn't suck and who draw stuff anime-related are allowed on the site now, so I don't think you need to worry much about it. |

Posted on: 05/18/12 03:14PM Oh, well if good stuff can still get on here, I don't really see a problem then. I just recall seeing some good stuff getting deleted recently so I came here to comment. Not trying to make any waves about the ToS.

Posted on: 05/21/12 01:25AM Danbooru still uploads the stuff that "Gelbooru" doesn't tolerate. And by "Gelbooru", I mean whoever runs this site.

And Gelbooru still uploads stuff that Danbooru doesn't tolerate, such as nude filters which Danbooru now deletes on sight. So what's your point? |

The danbooru bot is an automatic process that just grabs everything on Danbooru indiscriminately. Of course, there's no actual way to reasonably code the bot to properly filter out things that violate our Terms of Service. Even if we had it filter out certain tags, people could use that filter to prevent images that don't break our rules from making it over here. For example, the first thing we would probably filter out from Danbooru would be doujins. However, even if we were to stop the tag "doujinshi" from properly coming in, that still causes some problems: 1. Images are not always tagged properly. We would likely still get a large number of doujin images. 2. Not all "doujinshi" are banned. 4-koma are completely fine on Gelbooru. However, they're usually tagged "doujinshi". 3. If someone wanted to, they could easily tag an image that isn't a doujinshi page with the "doujinshi" tag, and therefore prevent it from making its way over here despite being a good image. When you think about it, though, it's the only real reason why automatic filtering of some content isn't an acceptable solution. Sure, we could start up a list of non-Japanese artists, scat, guro, etc and throw them into an automatic blacklist. But that would take a lot of work to maintain, and it also brings up the possibility of people abusing it by throwing the tags on images that aren't rule violations. I can specifically see Bleach and Naruto fans using this as a weapon in their retarded shipping shitfights. This is all a huge pain to do, and it brings little return on the investment. Sure, perhaps we'd get a few more visitors. However, the majority of our users don't come here specifically for such images. A lot of them probably wouldn't mind the artist rule being done like this, but I don't really see much point for the other types of images, such as scat and guro, where the portion of the userbase who enjoys them is fairly small. And, ironically, even though the non-Japanese artist part is the most likely to bring us more users, it's the least likely to be slipped in as a blacklist, since Gelbooru has been, from the beginning, specifically targeted at Japanese content. As a result, the only reasonable thing to do is to just completely disallow these images from the site. It's a lot easier to just delete a few images here and there than to maintain an auto-blacklist and to make sure no one abuses the system. And when it's for images that we didn't even really intend to make it onto Gelbooru in the first place, it just makes so much more sense. |

Hence the existence of forum #484 If you find anything that you think was unjustly deleted, or you yourself have an image deleted that you think was unjust, appeal it. Also I really doubt there's some fucking brony hierarchy trying desperately to plague the Boorus with their shit. The art saved on The G is, for the most part, all good and in some way Japanese-themed. The D has a mod who seems to think pony anything is good to upload, though... |

On their Pixiv profile page they have "こんにちは私の名前のヨーグルト! 私はカナダに住んでいる はじめまして!" which our Google overlord proclaims says "Hello My Name yogurt! I live in Canada Nice to meet you!". |
