It's not 2004 anymore and I'm tired of squinting at minuscule thumbnails. Please consider generating thumbnails with a more reasonable maximum dimension, say 250 px. Obviously this will require a bit more disk space and take time to generate thumbnails for all existing images, but it will be worth it.

Shit, I suddenly got a terrible case of deja vu. Did I already make this thread? If so please remove this and disregard/ban me or whatever

You serious, dude? Of ALL the atrocious issues this site has you choose to critique... the thumbnails? >.>

You ever hear that biblical parable about getting the log out of your eye before you concern yourself with the speck in someone else's eye? It's kinda like that lol

I don't know what browser you use, but Firefox lets you zoom in and out easily using Ctrl+MouseWheel

You know, there are people with low bandwidth. If you start making 250px thumbnails or larger, it takes a lot longer to generate any search page. Current thumbnails are large enough, and the pages load fast. Plus, making bigger thumbnails might fuck the page for 720p screens.

Having larger pictures to load also increases the load on the server since it has to send the thumbnails to you. And judging by the number of users, it might be a lot.

So no, thumbnails shouldn't be changed. They're big enough, pages load fast, it's really good as it is.

This is what I mean by it's not 2004 anymore. As network speeds, disk space, and processing power steadily increase, it becomes more viable to serve more and better quality content. "Some people have low bandwidth" isn't a reason to absurdly constrain an already image-heavy site for all users.

Not everyone has the latest i7 with Google Fiber.

I live in France and I can't have more than 100 KB/s where I live. Plus, I own several laptops from 2000-2005 and use like to browse Gelbooru for SFW when I'm not home.

So yeah, in the big cities, people don't have that problem. But a lot of people live in areas where high speed doesn't exist, and don't want to update from let's say an old Core2 just to browse a website. My Core2 handles most games *well*but Gelbooru is already slow due to the CPU.

Forcing people to load 30 250px thumbnails would prevent a huge number of users from using the website by blocking them either on the bandwidth, or the CPU.

Also, as I said, it'll multiply by 4 the bandwidth needed by the server to send the pictures to you (as thumbnails are 125 px if I remember correctly). So you also put a load on the server.

Or buy my high speed Internet and new servers for Gelbooru!

Believe it or not, serving out thumbnails is the biggest bottleneck we have in site performance. If we make the thumbnails bigger, performance will tank.

My point exactly. JSON/XML/PHP requests are several kB, while thumbs are already 50-100 kB usually (and you load a lot of them)

Fair enough.
