What really gets me is, what's the point of age ratings if you are going to censor stuff anyways. Either one thing or the other. If the problem is that children can find and play Mature rated games, then that's the problem of the parents, or the sellers, or even both, sellers should ask for ID before selling M-Rated games, and parents should know better instead of bitching to daddy state for more control to protect their 20 years old precious little children, artists be damned.

I guess the people who legislated the ESRB into existence would say that it’s better if you know what is in a game before you play it, which honestly is a pretty modest reason.

Unfortunately, that was just a legal pretense to initiate what they actually wanted, which is a way to regulate what content developers can put in games. I, for one, do not want to live in a world where it is normal for children to see gore and sex, but it’s better that people display that than for the spectrum of what can be allowed in art to be narrowed down to almost nothing.

Part of the problem as well is that often the censorship is the only thing separating an M Rating from an AO Rating.

And for various dumb reasons an AO Rating is a death sentence for actually advertising your game.

Yes it's stupid, but it's the hand we're dealt with when it comes to the ESRB.

AO was largely a death blow because big box stores and chains wouldn't stock said games. I suppose one of the few upsides to the whole digital thing is that such a restriction is no longer that much of a hindrance.

It only took a push to further strip us of ownership rights to get there.

I guess the difference between M and AO is the same difference between explicit ecchi and hentai, or better equivalent is the difference between an R rated movies and X rated movies.

Sexual content is like spice, it's there to enhance a dish (in this case, a game), spice is not for everyone and you can't make a good dish out of pure spice, but that's no reason to stop using spice in our food once in a while.
