Because horses weigh so much, they don't like to lay down for very long... however, I can't find any information to suggest that a horse will die if you keep him on his back for 'too long' (though, I imagine it would be uncomfortable...) as long as it's not for hours it should be okay, I'd think. They'll lay down on their sides for 2-3 hours before getting up because the're uncomfortable and starting to hurt. On the back would probably be different, but... not lethal.

Look at my horse.
My horse is amazing.
Give it a lick.
Mmmm, it tastes just like raisins.
I've a stroke of its mane.
It turns into a plane,
and then it turns back again
when you tug on its winky.
Oooh that's dirty!
Do you think so?
Well I better not show you
where the lemonade is made.
Sweet lemonade,
Mmm sweet lemonade,
Sweet lemonade,
Yeah sweet lemonade.
(dance to horse playing keyboard)
Get on my horse.
I'll take you round the universe,
and all the other places too.
I think you'll find that the universe
pretty much covers everything.
Shut up woman get on my horse!

Horses intestines are not static, they tend to move around more then they should so when a horse rolls on its back they shift and move, if they move into a bad position and gas or other things are blocked it can cause an infection and death.
