if I may, i'd like to offer my own interpretation. because the crown seems to be of the color of her black armor, it's safe to assume that the crown is hers as opposed to the man, and the sword impaling the crown seems to have belonged to the man, thus implying that he had bested her in combat, which is further supported by the fact that her sword is broken. yet, after engaging her in a duel and going so far as to defile the symbol of her sovereignty, he leaves her with her life, and a rose with a golden ring. What exactly the relationship between them is is left to our wild imaginations, but what is clear is that the white swordsman loves (or was once in love with) the dark princess, and she is unsure of how to accept her defeat, or the offering that the white swordsman had left her with.

A good interpretation, but not complete, I think. I don't see any signs of a battle of any kind having taken place, and knocking her crown off her head and impaling it in a single move with no actualm fight seems unlikely. Perhaps he was returning the crown to her and stabbed it into the ground, then gave her the gold ring and rose instead. Or he gave her the ring and rose while she gave him her crown, but he impaled it and left it there with his sword. Whatever the case, I don't think it looks like they fought or the crown was struck off her head, leaving it questionable and mysterious as to how the ended up like this.

The only evidence of a fight I can offer is the fact that the sword she is holding in her left hand appears to be broken. However, when making a piece, it is not always in the artist's favor to scrutinize over every possible detail, as it would distract the viewer from the elements the artist wants to portray. The dark princess with her broken sword in hand stands before her crown, the symbol of her power, as it is impaled by a white sword. Holding a rose with a golden ring, she turns her head to watch as the white swordsman leaves her behind. Although her sword is broken and her crown is impaled, her armor is flawless. Only the symbols of her power, her sword and her crown, are broken. Whatever ire the swordsman has for her or what she stands for, he did not harm her person. He leaves her physically unharmed, and with a symbol of love.

These elements are the subjects that the artist wants us to reflect on. Evidence of what may or may not have transpired before the moment that is depicted is not what is important. What's important are the symbols that are clearly being portrayed.

Or how about the actual artist's commentary?
There's no mystery here.

"Entrust the Future"

The continent was divided into two countries to the east and west. The countries had friendly relations, and enjoyed peace and prosperity.
The youngest child of a noble family in the eastern country and the princess of the western country had been childhood friends, and since they were promised to one another in marriage they became symbols of peace between the countries.
Time passed, and the boy became the leader of knights of the eastern country. Meanwhile, the girl inherited the crown and became queen. At that time, the two countries became embroiled in a dispute surrounding territory and economic resources. With each day the relationship between the countries deteriorated, and before long war broke out.
The war continued for so long no one could see an end to it. The western country, which had been falling behind in national power for a long time, grew unable to bear the quagmire of the war, and was defeated in battle after battle, so that even the throne came under attack.
With no time to be moved by the reunion they had awaited for so many years, the two who had been promised to each other crossed swords. But when he was about to seal his victory, the hand that gripped the man's sword dropped.
