Could be the shadowed part giving the illusion.

probably the way the handle and the blade don't line up

It's curved. With the end making a bend in the up side to come into a corner in the front/down side.
Also, rather than two halves of the side of the blade, it seems it's the edge upwards that instead of being sharp is like five centimeters wide.
It seems to me like it's the hilt of a katana with the blade of a normal european longsword bent like a scimitar. That's how it looks.
Regardless I like the image very much.

Let's see regarding the katana... First off, the blade is curved in the wrong direction and no, it's not because of lighting. No matter how you look at a katana in any lighting, it does not look like it's bent forward.
Second, the blade-hilt ratio is whack. The blade looks to be about 33" on a guess, while the hilt looks to be 8", best guess. While this is a possible combination in theory, in practice it would result in a horrendously balanced sword, with a balance point likely 10-12" out (for reference, a normal katana that is considered "quick" has an 11" hilt, 28" blade, and a 5-6" balance point).
Lastly, and this is just a minor thing, the guard looks to have a 4" diameter; the guard on a katana rarely exceeds 3" in diameter. If anything, though, I'd say this is actually a positive error, since it would cover the hand entirely. Anyone who's sparred with a bokken knows just how much it hurts getting hit in the thumb because of that damned inadequate excuse for a guard.
Also, does anyone else think the thing those girls are fighting look like the Witch-King of Angmar from Lord of the Rings?
