The book says HGSS which might probably stands for HeartGold and SoulSilver. That game retells Johto while Janine and Erika are from Kanto so he might be trying to find information on them not knowing it's the wrong region. That's just a guess off course.

@Anime_diehard1992_: Actually, the text right next to HGSS says "Kanto". And HeartGold and SoulSilver, just like Gold and Silver, take you to Kanto after you beat Johto. So he's looking them up in the right place. :P

Anyway, my guess is that Erika recognized Red, while Janine is like "OMG, you mean THE Red!?" and Red's like "Uh... who are you two?" And Erika runs off crying because Red doesn't remember her.
