Really, Sunrise and Bandai could use some originality like this instead of the "guy wearing colorful cardboard boxes" formula they've been recycling for decades. But every time they try to branch out into ACTUAL realism (ex: 00 S1) all the fan-boys just bitch that it's "GAY AND UGLY AND BAD AND LAZY AND STUPID AND WRONG FIX IT PERFECT LORD TOMINO."

Things have to follow a theme to believably fit into a specified universe. Gundam mobile suits weren't all boxy. Most Federation suits were but that was their style. Zeon suits were anything but. Look at the Kampfer. Anything but boxy but it fits into the original Gundam timeline.
You can always look at a Federation mobile suit and think "Hey, that's a Feddie MS". Or a Zeon MS and think "Hey, that's a Zeon MS"..Just like you can always look at a German tank and know instantly "Hey, that's a German tank", or compare an X-Wing and a TIE Fighter and know instantly who's side which unit is on.. because they all share key features or design principals.
You can have originality without being retarded.
All of the new Gundam series', except IGLOO, are stupid, because they try to over-drama the same basic events over and over while trying to pass it off as something new with unbelievably emo characters.
