You're talking like it isn't still a pretty big taboo in Japan and a massively polarizing subject in America.
Don't let the abundance of yaoi and yuri in anime, manga, and light novels mislead you.
It isn't quite the same as it is in America, where the concept of being gay itself is repulsive to many people. Instead, to be gay is simply to be different, which is something that Japanese culture has a massive problem with, regardless of how you're different. "The nail that sticks up will be hammered down" is a phrase that the Japanese take very seriously. There is massive social pressure to conform and not stick out, and equal pressure to keep up that pressure on others.
It would not be surprising to see something like this in Japan:
