Sen, Hime, and Shira are part of the current filler arc, which depict the new chuunin exam that hapenned between the 3 years gap, and during which most of our genins became chuunins. ;)

And unfortunately, Studio Pierrot has gone and botched what could have been best filler arc. Animation is a joke (just look at Neji's technique last ep and Lee's younger form when training), Shira feels like a rip off from Lee and Lee... what the fuck happened to his taijutsu skill!? I couldn't bring myself to finish last episode.

And unfortunately, Studio Pierrot has gone and botched what could have been best filler arc. Animation is a joke (just look at Neji's technique last ep and Lee's younger form when training), Shira feels like a rip off from Lee and Lee... what the fuck happened to his taijutsu skill!? I couldn't bring myself to finish last episode.

Don't forget they are still all genin, and one year younger than they were at the beginning of shippudden. With that in mind, you can guess taking on 6 guys simultaniously is a bit too much even for Lee. As for Neji, he's been very analytical. He's not yet full force as a result. You can see that from the fact that he mearly used 64 palms, when he has shown to have 128 palms as well as stronger gentle fist techniques
As for Shira, there's a critical difference with Lee : he's as analytical as Neji. He's the tactician of the group, even if he's taikutsu only, even the cautious and multi-step Sen does not analyse that much (which would also explain why she and Hime are still genins when their classmate Temari is already Jounin at this point)
