For those of you who don't know the guy in the background: that is Mach Rider from the 1985 (NES release title) game Mach Rider, which in turn was based in a 1972 toy made by Nintendo. The game laid the basis for dangerous, high-speed racing that would later inspire F-Zero. Mach Rider himself was something of an inspiration to Captain Falcon: a masked badass protecting the innocent and races really fast.
Interestingly if you play through enough levels in the game you get a strange image: normally after you beat a level you get a loading screen with Mach Rider standing besides his bike. But if you beat the last level you instead get an image of a woman in a rather tight outfit. Whether this was a joke from the developers, another character or Nintendo's first surprise gender reveal (Mach Rider is actually a woman) is unknown.
