To put it simply, and only in the context of this situation, the attendant, Mitsuba, was told by the mother of the household, Kikyo, to deny the black-haired kid, Alluka, any of his requests to test his power. After four denials, both Mitsuba and her most loved one, Hasama, who was elsewhere, were both crushed and killed.

There is more to it than that, like there being rules to his power and more context to this situation, but that's the gist of what's going on.

Since it's probably the gas thing ai that was mentioned in the manga that look like gas creatures, were they using nen in order to do this? probably since nens everything and can all the ai do that or do certain ones have very strong powers different from each one?

Who knows. I'm sort of inclined to think it's some power other than nen since if it was they shouldn't have so much trouble understanding it. They should have detected Nanika using aura if that were the case, although it's possible they just omitted that detail.
