Jimmy Page basically created the market for this guitar single-handedly. Gibson considered it a failure and was going to stop making it because it wasn't catching on, but once he started using it to play Stairway to Heaven live, demand for it went through the roof. He specifically chose it because it was the only double-neck guitar available with a 12-string neck on it. Ever since the 80s, of course, guitar manufacturers have taken it to beyond ridiculous lengths, making axes with five or more necks, which are more about showing off than actually using them to play.

Also, this guitar is not used on the studio recording of Stairway at all.
