I don't understand the monkey thing. I get that saying mean things is bad... but why should you not hear or see evil? wouldn't it be better if you could hear and see the evil, so that you could recognize it?

They also cover up the both side of respond.
You rather choose to hear no evil, no lies or anything that you not hear are considered not evil too.

Same goes for those who not speak and not witness the evil behave, anything that not come in contact with their sense of respond are all no-evil.

It's kinda little complex for me but that's how Japanese used them to be a kind of wisdom. It might be wise not to see some scene that might put you in a tight spot or hear something that you shouldn't here, right ;) ?
