most sites hide downvoted comments, and most sites make it very easy to see them. considering how many people converse/debate hidden comments, its clear most people do read them. if someone were trying to use downvoting as censorship, its a tremendously inefficient way to go about it.

the idea that people wouldnt downvote if gelbooru didnt hide comments is just bizarre, frankly. all over the internet, people downvote comments they dont agree with or find offensive, regardless of how the comment system is set up. if you give people the chance to easily react to things other people have said, we will take it, the easier the better. i may not have anything particular to add to a debate, i may not want to get involved in one, but if you let me express my most basic opinion with a mouseclick? sure, why not. its raising an anonymous hand to be counted with one side or another; its an audience reaction. i honestly dont get how you see it as a malicious act intended to silence.

Yeah, most of the comments were deleted. I don't remember exactly how it started, but Anon1's comment was in reply to someone else who equated downvoting to censorship. Things must have gotten heated at some point, hence the mass deletion.

The Hinata pictures are being censored though. By ensuring votes remain in the negative they get the pictures hidden in profiles that filter pictures with less than 0 rating, which is the default.

And it is someone abusing the system, many of these pictures recieve a slew of negative votes suddenly the moment they start crawling into positive rating.

Pictures that are really disliked tend to get a large number of negatives very quickly and they don't recover.

These get enough votes to keep them in the low negatives, and the moment they tend towards positive, they get downvoted back to lows.

It's not the normal behavior of the downvote system.

Sure, but the discussion here was about comments being downvoted, not images.

Yeah, the anti-H*nata votebots are getting a bit ridiculous now. Something ought to be done about it.

Not sure anything CAN be done.

A while back there was a dude went around posting "fuck you Sakura" on literally every single Sakura pic, for nearly a year. He stopped eventually - probably got tired of it, or grew up, or found things that mattered more to him than fictional characters. The Hinata hater will eventually stop too.

At the time of the original discussion, the images were not massively downvoted yet, only comments were hit if they went a certain direction. The topics were, are style are, always the same, hence my mention that it was an attempt my some to censor by abusing the system. Oh, and yeah, I was the one starting it, but my comments along with most of those replying to me got deleted. ;)

As for the Hinata haters, does not seem to actually be Hinata specifically. Hinata alone pics usually get away with it, and there are non-Hinata pics that do get hit. The only common point i was able to always get from all of them is that they always implied, directly or through family ties, the canon shipping : NaruHina and SasuSaku. My guess, although i'm quite convinced about it, is that we're dealing with either NaruHina or SasuSaku fans that won't let go despite their shipping having been long officially denied, or in the same vein old anti-fan-clubs. Probably both. Still, i can only speculate, not prove. ;)
