The hidden comment makes a valid point, though, Satoshi did very little to earn his victories in the first series. He "beat" Takeshi by cheating, he "beat" Natsume(Sabrina) by her forfeiting by no action on Satoshi's part, Charizard beat Magmar by himself, and so forth.

At the start of one episode, Kasumi points this frequent occurrence out, and says how he could just keep making Gym leaders feel sorry for him until they give him their badges. Satoshi arrogantly says he gets his badges from natural skill, which Kasumi fucking explodes on him over, because he's anything but skillful at that this early point.
