Rufus and Tseng surviving was seriously such a cop-out retcon. I can kind of get Tseng as it wasn't definitively stated he died and Elena's line about him being "done in" was mistranslated, but Rufus got blasted in the face by Diamond Weapon and MULTIPLE NPCs said he was dead.

Apparently the only person who ever dies in FF7 (and stays dead) is Aeris.

That's storytelling, Anon1. Writers will write whatever will make a compelling story, even at the cost of realistic effects. It's in everything.
