Unfortunately Leto actually has talent and could’ve made it work too, I think. They just went in a very bad direction overall with their interpretation of the Joker. I felt the same way with Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face at the time, quality actor in a potentially great role but with misguided people in charge. To be fair though, that opening monologue he gave while his face was obscured in shadow was actually pretty nice when it was still kind of subtle before he went full on hammy clown.
And as bad as that Joker looked, he sort of blended in with the overall tone and aesthetic of Suicide Squad. None of the other Jokers look like they would’ve fit in or belong in that mess. That is as positive as I’m willing to be about that take on Joker.

Nawh, Tommy Lee Jones was very miscast as Two-Face, his range and ability isn't a fit for that character, and it didn't help that he was acting opposite the absolutely terrible casting of Jim Carrey as the Riddler. Then you have the horrific Robin subplot with a again badly miscast actor(Chris) , then another subplot with Nicole 'plastic' Kidman as the love interest, the whole thing was a busy mess thanks to studio meddling. The entire script sucked ass. Which is sad, because Val was actually really good as Batman, Alfred is still the best live action version of the character IMHO, and the art direction is great.
