At shrines you can draw omikuji, or fortunes, and traditionally you tie off "bad luck" or "very bad luck" as pictured here. But in this case, bad luck entitles you to 10 strikes with the ???? (purification rod, the thingy to the right that shrine maidens swing around), and very bad luck = 20 strikes.
