Now Viewing: my_little_pony_friendship_is_magicTag type: None Refers to this specific My Little Pony series. It is considered to be the fourth generation of the long-running My Little Pony franchise. It is an episodic North American musical fantasy comedy TV series, with occasional adventure-oriented stories, that debuted in 2010 and is the first full length My Little Pony TV series since My Little Pony Tales in 1992. It is created by Lauren Faust who worked on the series until the end of the second season. The vocal music is composed by Daniel Ingram and the non-vocal instrumental background music is composed by William Anderson. Unlike previous My Little Pony series, this incarnation utilizes Adobe Flash for its animation but the series still retains the strong cute appeal of the franchise. It is set in the land of Equestria, populated by sentient ponies who come in all sorts of colors. It is ruled by Princess Celestia who is in charge of managing the sun and moon. In the past, she was only in charge of causing the sun to rise, but her younger sister grew to dislike how the ponies would only play during the day and refused to lower the moon. The sisters clashed with each other and Celestia used the Elements of Harmony to banish her younger sister to the moon who is then known as Nightmare Moon. The antisocial, bookish, and obsessive compulsive Twilight Sparkle becomes alarmed after doing some research on the history of Equestria and realizing that the mare in the moon will return on the longest day of the 1000th year after her battle with Celestia. This day happens to be the same day as the upcoming Summer Sun Celebration. Twilight writes a letter to warn Celestia but Celestia responds by telling Twilight that she should stop spending all her time reading books, make preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration which will be held in the town of Ponyville, and go out and make friends. Twilight heads to Ponyville with her assistant Spike to fulfill her tasks but is reluctant to make friends and is put off by the quirky behavior of the town's residents. She becomes acquainted with Rarity, Fluttershy, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash. But Nightmare Moon returns, just as Twilight feared. Twilight sets out to stop her, and finds herself relying on her new acquaintances to find the Elements of Harmony in order to stop Nightmare Moon from plunging Equestria into an eternal night. Twilight realizes that the true Elements of Harmony are in fact her friends and after this realization, is able to defeat Nightmare Moon. Twilight, having discovered the value of friendship, finds herself reluctant to leave Ponyville, but Princess Celestia congratulates her and tells her that she can stay in Ponyville learning about the magic of friendship with her new friends with the caveat that Twilight will report what she learned on each day. The series follows the ponies' day to day misadventures and the lessons they learn about friendship. Perhaps due to the sheer size of the cast, quite a few voice actresses play multiple characters which at times leads to the voice actresses talking to themselves in different voices. Tabitha St. Germain, who plays Rarity and many supporting characters, has the record of most voice acting credits in the series and has also played multiple characters in My Little Pony G3. The My Little Pony franchise was often perceived as appealing to only young girls. One of Faust's stated goals with this series is to create a show that will not only appeal to young girls but also a show that will be appreciated by older audiences. This series is notable for helping break the stereotype that My Little Pony only appeals to young girls as it ended up not only appealing to young girls, but to older audiences as well. The ratings for the series began at 1.4 million and were as high as 4 million per month by the end of the first season and has continued to grow since then. It has amassed a very large male fandom as well who are called bronies, a portmanteau of brother and pony. Its popularity amongst this demographic was ironically inspired by an article, written by Amid Amidi and posted on the website Cartoon Brew, criticizing this series and other contemporary animation titled "The End of the Creator-Driven Era in TV Animation." Both out of curiosity and backlash against the article, many users on the image board 4chan decided to watch the show and many ended up finding out that they genuinely enjoyed the series and the series' popularity snowballed from there. This surprisingly large demographic has inspired a documentary called Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony which was created by the staff members of Friendship is Magic. This specific series has also become something of a North American equivalent to Touhou in terms of being meme fuel. Besides memes generated from scenes from the show itself, it is common for fans to draw pony themed crossovers and parodies. Many background extras who receive little development in the show itself have been given backstories, names, and are even made the stars of various fan works. The series uses a lot of horse related terminology, puns, and even changes common expressions into horse-related ones. For example, instead of using the word everybody, characters almost always use everypony. The creators of the series maintain a close relation with the fans and many fandom in jokes have made their way into or are acknowledged by the actual series. This series also holds the distinction of being the very first My Little Pony series to receive a Japanese localization and dub, which premiered on April 2, 2013. It is also set to receive a manga adaptation by Himekawa_Akira. The series is also set to receive a made for TV movie called Equestria Girls which involves Twilight Sparkle being sent to an alternate world where the characters are all human and Spike is a dog; Twilight herself also turns into a human.
