Now Viewing: rahxephonTag type: Copyright ラーゼフォン A mecha action/romantic drama anime TV series animated by Bones_(Company). It ran from January 21, 2002 to September 11, 2002. It was created by veteran mecha designer Izubuchi_Yutaka who also directed the anime in his first time at the helm of anime TV series. The soundtrack was composed by jazz musician Hashimoto Ichiko in her first anime soundtrack. Hashimoto also performs the series' ending theme, some of the vocal songs in the series, and has a significant supporting role in the main series as Kamina Maya. The opening theme is performed by Sakamoto_Maaya, who plays the major character Mishima Reika, and composed by Sakamoto's frequent collaborator Kanno Yoko. The characters were designed by Yamada_Akihiro. It was preceded by a short manga that ran from August 19, 2001 – November 19, 2002. The TV series was adapted into a anime film titled RahXephon Tagen Hensōkyoku that was released on April 19, 2003. The film was directed by Kyoda Tomoki who also worked on some episodes of the series. The film follows the general plot of the series albeit greatly condensed, but has quite a few differences towards the end with approximately 30 minutes of material unique to the film. The series has quite a few major plot twists/reveals so be wary of spoilers online. It tells the story of Kamina Ayato, a teen boy who lives in the secluded city of Tokyo Jupiter in 2015. The world had gone through a near apocalyptic series of events that drastically reduced the world's population with Tokyo Jupiter being one of the few bastions of civilization left. Kamina lives a peaceful but somewhat lonely life. In his free time, he spends his time painting, and is obsessed with one image of a girl in a yellow dress with her back turned to the viewer. At school, he hangs out with his friends Toigai Mamoru and Asahina Hiroko, but when Kamina comes home, he is usually alone because his single mother Maya spends most of her time handling government work. Kamina's idyllic life is forever turned upside down once invaders crash through the barrier hiding Tokyo Jupiter and began engaging in battle with Jupiter's army. Kamina is caught in the middle of the crossfire and in his attempts to survive, he encounters two mysterious women. The first is Shitou Haruka, an adult woman from outside of Tokyo Jupiter who has infiltrated the city in order to rescue him. She promises to show him the truth of the world if he agrees to come with her. The second is Mishima Reika, a teen girl who is the spitting image of the girl in Kamina's painting, and seems to possess supernatural powers. Mishima has a connection to, and deliberately directs Kamina to special mech called the RahXephon, and Kamina soon finds out that he seems to be the only person who can pilot it. Kamina is inspired by these two women to find out the truth of the world and eventually agrees to follow Haruka out of Tokyo Jupiter. Upon leaving the city, Kamina effectively becomes a soldier as the pilot of RahXephon, using the mech to do battle against mysterious superweapons called Dolems. With each battle he partakes in, he steadily learns the truth behind the world and his place in it . . . With his first directing job, Izubuchi wanted to create an anime inspired by the mecha series of the 1970s-1980s, but updated for the present era and mixed in with his own flair. He was particularly inspired by the 1975 mecha anime Yuusha Raideen, which influenced this series' mecha designs and plot. He hoped that the final product would set a new standard for the mecha genre. The series was critically acclaimed, winning the award for best anime television series at the 7th Animation Kobe fair.
