He began his career in 1994 when he joined the video game company Falcom, working on graphic design. He made his directorial debut in 1998 with the short anime film Kakomareta Sekai and made his breakthrough with the 1999 5 minute short, Kanojo_to_Kanojo_no_Neko, which was later remade as a short TV series in 2016. He is most well known for his bittersweet romance dramas where physical distance plays a large role in the main relationship's development such as 5_Centimenters_per_Second, Hoshi_no_Koe, and Kimi_no_na_wa.. He has a distinctive visual style involving highly detailed and realistic looking environments that are made somewhat stylized via filters, lens flare, and cloud placement. Most of his work has received widespread critical acclaim, but it was not until Kimi o Na Wa. that he would receive massive box office success as well. Outside of animating movies, he has also worked on various visual novel OPs and commercials. He is married to actress Misako Chieko and they have a daughter who has also become an actress, Niitsu Chise.
