The games are mostly shoot-em-ups with the player in control of Fox in his Arwing, but games after Star Fox 64 have dipped their toes in other genres. The original game was released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo and was notable for having polygonal graphics. The original game was set to have a sequel, but it was never released even though it was mostly complete. Many ideas from the unreleased Star Fox 2 like Star Wolf and All range mode show up in the most well known entry in the franchise, the 1997 continuity reboot/remake Star Fox 64. The series is also heavily influenced by science fiction movies and anime/manga. For example, the mission Katina and the boss fight of the level in Star Fox 64 is very similar to the movie Independence Day. Sector Y also features bipedal mecha that look like an animal version of a Gundam. It even features a red mecha that is much faster than the others echoing Char's famous boast that his red Zaku mech is three times faster than all others. Star Fox 64 is notable for having all of its dialogue voice acted (except for the trainer in Training mode though the remake Star Fox 64 3D gives him a voice) which was uncommon for the cartridge-based Nintendo 64 games. It also made use of the Rumble Pak, which would cause the controller to rumble during appropriate moments like the massive explosions that would occur during a boss's death sequence. The idea of making the controller 'rumble' during such moments to enhance the player's immersion would be used in many subsequent video games. After Starfox 64, Nintendo handed the franchise off to other developers for the sequels which continue directly from Star Fox 64. However, the sequels are generally regarded as being inferior to 64. There is also a manga spinoff titled Farewell, my Beloved Falco that also takes place in the 64 continuity. Nintendo EAD returned to develop Star Fox with another reboot, the 2016 Star Fox Zero, which is also a collaboration with Platinum Games. The franchise has no humans in its cast. The majority of the cast are talking animals that act human like. Many of them are also named after their species. Miyamoto used non-human animals as the cast, because he wanted the series to be different from other science fiction stories with humans, robots, superheroes, and monsters in the cast. The Star Fox team themselves were inspired by Japanese folk lore. The franchise's aesthetic is heavily inspired by the 1964 British series Thunderbirds, which depicted its characters with puppets. The original Star Fox's cover art depicted its cast in a similar fashion and while subsequent games makes the characters less puppet-like during cutscenes, the characters' mouth movements when talking during levels are still very puppet-like. Fox has been playable in all Super Smash Bros. games. Falco is playable in Melee and Brawl, and Wolf is also playable in Brawl. The other Star Fox members have cameoed in Melee and Brawl, and Wolf's fellow Star Wolf members also cameo in Brawl.
