Now Viewing: the_animatrixTag type: Copyright Tag refers to images referencing this animated cyberpunk anthology spinoff of The_Matrix franchise. It is a Japanese/American co-production that was released on video on June 3, 2003, the same year as The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions which completed the original Matrix trilogy. The anthology's stories are all canon to the Matrix universe and series creators, Lana and Lily Wachowski who are credited as their pre-transition names Larry and Andy Wachowski, were involved in writing multiple stories. Some of the episodes were animated and directed by Western animators/studios, but the majority of them were handled by Japanese animators, paying tribute to a franchise that was heavily inspired by anime since its inception. Each story is mostly stand-alone, though they assume the audience has seen the original movie, and said film's major reveals heavily influence each story. The stories consist of: Final Flight of the Osiris This episode was directed by Andrew R. Jones and written by the Wachowskis. It is the only full CG-animated episode and covers the last stand of the eponymous ship's crew as they relay key information to Zion. The Second Renaissance A two part story that functions as a prequel to the entire Matrix franchise, showing the origins of the human vs machine conflict. This is the darkest and bloodiest story in the entire Matrix franchise. It was directed by Maeda Mahiro, written by the Wachowskis, and animated by Studio_4C. Kid's Story: This story tells the origin story of Kid, a supporting character in Matrix Reloaded. It shows how Kid, an otherwise regular high school student, cottons on to the truth of the Matrix by himself and how he came to be acquainted with series hero Neo. It was directed by Watanabe Shinichiro, written by the Wachowskis, and animated by Studio_4C. This episode is colored in a washed-out near monochrome fashion with artwork that looks near photorealistic. Program: This story follows a woman named Cis who is in the middle of a training program based off of feudal Japan. A fun combat session with her companion Duo soon turns serious once he reveals that he wants to plug himself back into and stay in the Matrix. This episode was written and directed by Kawajiri_Yoshiaki, and animated by Madhouse, and is stylistically much like his feature length anime films. World Record: This story follows a superstar track runner named Dan Davis, who is determined to set a world record, even if he has to push his body beyond its limits. While he is in the middle of the biggest race of his life, he runs so fast that he comes close to uncovering the truth of the Matrix. This episode was directed by Koike_Takeshi in one of his early directorial works and written by Kawajiri. It was animated by Madhouse. Beyond: This story follows a teen girl named Yoko who's searching for her missing cat Yuki. She learns from a group of neighborhood kids that her cat has wandered into a strange supposedly haunted house where the rules of gravity and physics don't seem to apply. It is notably different in tone and style from most Matrix media, being visually colorful and more like a slice of life coming of age story combined with mystery. It was written and directed by Morimoto Koji and animated by Studio_4C. A Detective Story: This story follows a down on his luck private eye named Ash, who gets an unusual case, which has ruined its previous investigators. He is to track down and apprehend a hacker named Trinity. As Ash follows Trinity, he soon realizes that he has stumbled into a conspiracy much bigger than he had anticipated. This is the second episode directed by Watanabe Shinichiro and is aesthetically closer to his usual style. It is animated by Studio_4C. It is a noir story set in a cyberpunk universe and is animated in a monochrome style in a throwback to 1930s-1940s era of noir films, which is when the genre was at its peak popularity. Matriculated: This story follows a group of human rebels who successfully capture a machine and decide to do an experiment to see if they can convert a machine to the humans' side. This story was written and directed by Peter Chung and is much like his usual style. It was animated by DNA.
