A very dark hentai crime action OVA released in 1998 written and directed by Umetsu_Yasuomi Sawa is an orphaned teenage girl who is taken in by the sleazy and corrupt police man Akai and trained to be his personal vigilante assassin. After serving him for a few years, she begins to question her role when she falls in love with a male fellow assassin named Oburi. The two of them decide to quit their lives as assassins but Akai and Oburi's boss Kanie won't let them go easily. . . Besides its sex scenes, the OVA is notable for its over the top and very gory gunfights. The sex scenes, in particular, caused some controversy due to Sawa's young age and led to the OVA being banned in some countries. There are two versions of the OVA, one that includes the explicit sex scenes and one that removes them but keeps the rest of the story intact. The OVA is one of the most well known of Umetsu's works and is the first of his girls with guns themed anime. It is the main inspiration for the music video of No Doubt's song Ex Girlfriend. It also has been adapted into a North American live action film. The live action film was notably stuck in pre-production limbo for a number of years but will be released in 2014. The film was shot in Johannesburg, South Africa and the cast of characters are now played by non-Japanese actors. The film is written and directed by Ralph Ziman and stars India Eisly as the heroine Sawa. The film is also the third anime-related production that Samuel L. Jackson has been involved with and he plays the Akai counterpart Karl Aker. The OVA is suggested to be in the same universe as the considerably more lighthearted Mezzo series; Sawa has a cameo in Mezzo Forte. Followed by Kite_Liberator. Related: Mezzo_Forte Sawa has a cameo.
