It was written by Koga Arata, Yamaura Hiroyasu, Matsuzaki Kenichi, Tomita Sukehiro, and Watanabe Yuuji. The soundtrack was composed by Sugiyama Koichi, and the characters were designed by Kogawa_Tomonori. The series ran from May 8, 1980 to January 30, 1981. The series story is spread over the original 39 episode TV series, one compilation movie (A Contact), and one finale movie Be Invoked. The TV series ended on a conclusive note and the movie Be Invoked has a similar outcome, but plays out as an alternate version of the final episodes of the series. It is set in 2300, mankind has begun colonizing planets. One of these planets is the planet Solo, where the colonists discover a trio of strange tank like vehicles that they are unable to move. The colonists reside peacefully on the planet while their researches study the machines and the surrounding ruins. However, the peace is destroyed once a group of human-like aliens known as the Buff Clan arrive on the planet. Karala, the daughter of the Clan's commanding officer, breaks off from the other Buff Clan members to investigate the colonists. She is followed by members of the military to make sure she's safe. Unfortunately, said soldiers are on edge trying to make sure she is safe, and they end up opening fire once they suspect she's being attacked, sparking a chain of events that snowballs into an all out war between the humans and the Buff Clan. The colonists, which include protagonist Cosmo Yuuki, escape from the Buff Clan by boarding the mysterious tanks, only to discover that they can combine to form a powerful mecha known as Ideon. The colonists escape with Ideon, but they get no respite from the Buff Clan, who have been searching for the Ideon, a mech considered legendary in their culture, for ages. Thus begins a desperate battle for survival as the colonists fend off attacks from the Buff Clan while they try to unravel the secrets behind the mysterious machine. Like Tomino's most famous work Gundam, the series is a space opera with a strong anti-war message with battles depicted as having devastating physical and psychological consequences on both sides. The series is famous for being one of Tomino's darkest mecha anime as well as the one with the highest body count. Its tone and themes were a big influence on the later mecha series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which also ended up having its story spread over a TV series, a compilation movie, and a finale movie that can double as an alternate versions of its last few episodes.
