The anime is not an adaptation of any of the games but rather a canon installment in the franchise, taking place after Devil May Cry 1, but before Devil May Cry 2. It ran from June 14, 2007 to September 6, 2007. It was animated by Madhouse and directed by Itagaki Shin and written by Inoue Toshiki. The rock soundtrack was composed by rungran. Unlike the main games, each of which has a main conflict that Dante has to solve, this series adopts a more episodic structure, following the various jobs Dante takes. As such, the anime introduces quite a few characters unique to this series with the most prominent being Patty Lowell, a young girl that Dante has to protect and take care of, who acts as the secondary main character of the anime. This series is notably the first time the Devil May Cry characters were voiced in Japanese and the seiyuus would go on to reprise their roles in the Japanese dubs of subsequent games. The English cast of the Devil May Cry games reprised their roles for the anime's English dub.
