The films' success launched lead actor Bruce Willis's film career. After the success of the original film, Bruce Willis switched from acting in TV series to predominantly acting in movies. Bruce Willis was considered to be an unorthodox casting choice when the first movie was made due to him being mostly known for comedies, but the movie's massive success proved that critics and audiences could accept him as an action hero and he would go on to be best known for action films. The original movie also launched stage actor Alan Rickman's (Hans Gruber) film career. The films popularized the use of hostage situation plots in action movies although only the first two Die Hard movies revolved around a hostage situation. The films pit John Mcclane, a clever working class cop who is good at improvising, against an intelligent villain with a complex master plan. In each movie, McClane often has a friend/companion helping out throughout the movie but he is otherwise forced to deal with the villain's threat by himself. Each sequel raises the stakes and the scale of the action scenes. The films often begin with Mcclane minding his own business and trying to sort out his life before being dragged into the film's conflict. Although he often grumbles about his situation, he still works hard to save the day. McClane often suffers a lot of damage over the course of each film, but as the series' title indicates, he refuses to go down easily and manages to survive against all odds. Most of the movies are actually adaptations of other works altered to be part of the same franchise with the fifth film being the only film that isn't an adaptation. The original film was an adaptation of the novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp, but although it shared the basic premise, the film made many changes. The third Die Hard film, With a Vengeance was also at one point intended to be a Lethal Weapon film. The films were also popular in Japan and have been homaged and parodied many times. The beat em up game Dynamite Deka series is heavily inspired by Die Hard but is not an adaptation of the films. However, the first game was considered to be similar enough to the first film so it was localized in North America as Die Hard Arcade.
