Now Viewing: friday_the_13thTag type: Copyright A popular, iconic, and influential American slasher horror movie series named after the belief that any Friday that happens to fall on the 13th of any month is an unlucky one. The first film was released on 1980. Although each film features a mostly different cast of characters, they, except for the 2009 reboot, are all in direct continuity with each other. The first few sequels even had recaps of the previous film's events. The films tended to fare poorly with professional film critics, but the franchise is one of the most financially successful franchises in American pop culture. Outside of the main film franchise, there have been novels, comic books, video games, and a TV series based off of the films. The films have grossed over $465 million dollars worldwide. The franchise begins at Camp Crystal Lake, a peaceful camping site that has had its reputation stained by the brutal murder of two camp counselors in 1958 as well as the drowning of a young boy in 1957. In the 1980s, a new generation of camp counselors reopens the camp, only to end up restarting the killer's killing spree. Said killer seems to have a particular grudge against the counselors and goes out of their way to murder them in a variety of creative and gruesome ways. The camp counselors fight for their lives, but even when they discover the killer's identity, the killer's legacy lives on and the murders continue. . . The films are famous and controversial for their brutal death scenes. Besides the grisly murders, they are most famous for introducing the quiet and incredibly resilient hockey masked machete wielding killer Jason Voorhees, who is an important character in all of the films, though it would not be until the third film that Jason would develop his iconic appearance. It is also not until the second film that he becomes the primary antagonist. Jason is a large influence on Splatterhouse's Rick Taylor's design as well as Judgment from Battle Arena Toshinden and is a popular source of horror movie parodies. In parodies, he is often depicted wielding a chainsaw even though he primarily uses a machete in the films. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor also features a character that's a parody of Jason. The series has also been adapted into video games. Jason also makes his debut as a fighting game character in Mortal Kombat X.
