Now Viewing: garlock_simonTag type: Character Refers to the version of Simon that appears in the opening scene of episode 1 of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. He wears a black longcoat, but doesn't have the sunglasses Simon wears in the last arc of the TV series though the top half of his face is covered in shadow to avoid giving away the character's identity although by the middle of the series, or earlier for audience members who can recognize voice actors' voices, it is clear who the character is. He is called Garlock Simon because he, and the opening scene, is heavily inspired by Captain Harlock. Gar is of course a reference to the meme GAR where male fans admit to having a man crush on a particularly badass male character. In the original TV series, the opening scene is never clearly explained making it something of an oddball moment in the series. This is because the opening scene and Garlock Simon was originally intended to be foreshadowing of what the last arc was supposed to be like and the series would eventually lead up to the first episode's opening. However, by the time the series reached its finale, the series' story changed quite a bit from its initial plan and the opening scene ends up never happening. The movie adaptation Gurren-hen notably removes this scene and replaces it with a more plot relevant scene of Lordgenome's backstory (also Parallel Works 8). Despite the questionable canon status of the opening, fans proposed a theory that the opening scene of the series is meant to show what the Gurren Brigade would have turned into if they abused Spiral Power and waged war on other Spiral beings, eventually causing the Spiral Nemesis as the Anti Spirals had feared they would. This theory makes Garlock Simon a villain in contrast to the heroic character seen in the main series. While it was not their original intent, the creators liked the theory and accepted it as a sort of canonical explanation for the opening scene. He is voiced by Kakihara_Tetsuya.
