The first game debuted on November 15, 2001 as a launch title for the XBOX. Humans in the game's universe have begun spreading out to other planets thanks to Earth becoming overpopulated and innovations in faster-than-light travel, colonizing other planets has created another set of problems as humans anger a highly militarized and religious alien race known as the Covenant who declare war on humanity starting a long and bloody war that has no apparent end in sight. For the war effort, humans have established a super soldier project, called the SPARTAN project, on the planet of Reach. The soldiers created as a result of the project prove to be humanity's best hope, but the majority of them are killed by the Covenant. One of them, the protagonist Master Chief, has managed to be placed in stasis on the spaceship Pillar of Autumn which escapes from Reach. At the beginning of the first game, he is called out of stasis and is assisted by a female AI program named Cortana. Chief is quickly thrust into battle when the Covenant attack the ship and Chief escapes, only to crash land on the eponymous ring-shaped planet. Chief sets out to help humanity fight the Covenant, but he discovers that the Covenant are not the only threat that humans have to deal with. . . The games give the player the ability to throw grenades without having to put away the character's firearm. All of the weapons can be used to physically strike the enemy as well as shooting. It also had two separate bars, one for shield and one for health. Avoiding damage allows for the shields to regenerate. Once the shields are depleted, the player's health will drop when taking damage although some powerful attacks will severely wound or kill the player even if their shields haven't been completely depleted. From the second game onwards, both regenerate. Besides on-foot gunplay, there are plenty of vehicles that the players can use, including spaceships. The games' levels, both single and multiplayer ones, are often large in size and are able to accommodate all of these vehicles. The series has an in-depth mythology, which has also received an expanded universe treatment, much like Star Wars. There are numerous books and an anime anthology designed to elaborate on the series' setting outside of the main games. The single player mode has a strong emphasis on story and there is a lot of dialogue even in the middle of a gun battle. Each Covenent species has its own unique mannerisms and special tactics. In Halo Reach, the Covenant also speak in a distinct language. The series brought competitive multiplayer online first person shooter gameplay onto consoles which also contributed to the series' popularity. While it is not an official gameplay mechanic, the series' multiplayer is also known for helping popularize the controversial and sexually suggestive practice of teabagging in video games due to quite a few players indulging in the act upon killing one of their enemies. The term is a reference to the sexual act of a man placing his scrotum into his partner's mouth or face. After killing one of their enemies, some players will choose to walk over to enemy's corpse and celebrate their victory by crouching on their enemy's face and then standing up repeatedly so that it looks like the victor is dipping his testicles on his opponent's face as a way to humiliate their defeated opponent. However, the match is usually still going on when a player is teabagging and if a teabagger isn't careful, he can be killed by other players while he's trying to teabag making the act potentially risky. This tendency has also spread to other competitive multiplayer video games that allow the players to crouch though the acceptance of this practice widely varies with some communities allowing it and some considering it to be highly offensive. Starting with Halo 3, the series also has a special replay function called Saved Films, which allows players to save and replay footage from single player gameplay or multiplayer matches. Although the series is a first person video game, Saved Films allows players to view events from multiple third person angles. The player can also slow down the footage or zoom in on other players. This function has often been used to capture moments that would be otherwise impossible to see from a single first person perspective. The series also has many references to Bungie's previous first person shooter series Marathon. The series also spawned one of the longest running and most popular machinama series, Red vs. Blue. Although Red vs. Blue is based off of the assets from the Halo games, it is not an official canon Halo work. However, the Halo developers have acknowledged Red vs. Blue creator Rooster Teeth's work and the characters and voice actors of Red vs. Blue have made cameos in Halo 3 and 4. A special gameplay mode called Grifball, which originated in Red vs. Blue, had special multiplayer playlists built upon it, starting with Halo 3. Although the franchise is known for being Microsoft's flagship game franchise, the first game was originally announced on July 21, 1999 at the Macworld Conference & Expo. It was originally intended to be a real time strategy game for Mac and Windows systems, but eventually became a first person shooter on Microsoft's then new console, XBOX. The franchise's popularity has led to its characters, Nicole Spartan-458 in Dead or Alive 4 and Arbiter in Killer Instinct 2013, appearing as guest characters in other characters. However, the protagonist Master Chief has yet to be a playable guest character though his armor appeared in Fable II. Nicole technically does not appear in the original Halo games, but she is a Spartan soldier like Master Chief and has similar abilities.
