The series is a lighthearted and cute Japanese situation comedy manga series written and illustrated by Yuto and published by Square Enix. The manga debuted on September 2006 and concluded on October 2011. It was adapted into an anime by Gainax on January 20, 2010, and they inserted quite a few references to their past work. The anime is directed by Mizushima Seiji and written by Oguro Yuichiro. Characters were designed by Otsuka_Mai. Tsuchida Naozumi is about to begin his first day at work as a teacher at Hanamaru Youchien. He is the first male teacher to work at the school. While on the way to work, he meets a cheerful and quirky little girl named Anzu who, due to a miscommunication between the two, thinks he is attracted to her romantically which greatly pleases the young girl. Once Tsuchida arrives at Hanamaru, he is exasperated to discover that Anzu is not only one of his students but also the daughter of his best female friend in high school Sakura who seems to encourage Anzu's 'relationship' with Tsuchida. Tsuchida is instead interested in his coworker Yamamoto Nanako. Although the two of them develop a good relationship, Tsuchida struggles to get her to realize his feelings for her as she always interprets his romantic gestures as platonic ones. Anzu, in turn, refuses to give up on Tsuchida and she works with her classmates/friends, Hiiragi and Koume, to win Tsuchida's heart. The series has a strong cute appeal and has a distinctive way of depicting children. The child characters are drawn with tiny and thin arms and legs, which makes them look like chibi characters. The series features a lot of pop cultural references and jokes. Each episode of the anime has an unique ending sequence, most of which homage other works of fiction.
