An iconic American action adventure series that is influenced by 1930s-40s action adventure film serials. The original film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released in 1981. All of the movies are directed by Steven Spielberg and have a story conceived by George Lucas although he did not write the scripts to the films. They all feature orchestral soundtracks composed by John Williams which has become iconic. Many adventure film parodies will often feature an homage to Williams' music. The series revolves around the archaeologist adventurer/professor Indiana Jones who travels the world to get his hands on various supernaturally powered artifacts before the villains do. The artifacts are taken from various mythologies around the world and the film's universe runs on the premise that all of the mythologies are true. The series is also inspired by the James Bond franchise and like Bond, Indy is also quite popular amongst the opposite sex and has had multiple love interests over the course of his adventures. The entries in the series are predominantly standalone although there are a few references to Indy's other adventures and there is comparatively stronger continuity amongst them in contrast to the James Bond film series. Indy often has to explore booby trap filled ruins and dungeons throughout the series. While Indy is able to narrowly escape death, the antagonists are generally less fortunate and often suffer gruesome deaths related to the main artifact of the adventure or the various booby traps. Each entry in the series has at least one fight where Indy is forced into a fight under unusual circumstances like trying to fight off a giant henchman while the Indy is stuck with him on a conveyor belt that leads to a rock crusher, a fight made more difficult for Indy as a possessed boy helps the henchman by attacking a voodoo doll of Indy. The enormous success of the films has led to many video game and comic adaptations and influenced many subsequent action adventure films and video games, which often involved a hero/heroine venturing around the world exploring various tombs and fighting to get his/her hands on an artifact before the villains do. Harrison Ford, who played Indiana Jones, became a superstar thanks to the films. Because of the movies, he is the only main actor of the original Star Wars film trilogy to have a successful film career. The films were an influence on Tomb_Raider, Uncharted, and Donkey_Kong_Country Jojo_no_Kimyou_na_Bouken Part 2 Battle Tendency is reminiscent of the Indiana Jones films in style and also features Nazis. Joseph Joestar's appearance as an old man in Part 3 resembles a fusion of Indiana Jones and Sean Connery. The anime/manga Explorer_Woman_Ray is also inspired by this series.
