Now Viewing: Itou_JunjiTag type: Artist 伊藤 潤二 A male mangaka born on July 31, 1963 in what used to be called Sakashita, which was absorbed into Nakatsugawa. He is one of the most popular horror mangaka of his generation whose work has been adapted into both live action films and anime. He became interested in the genre from a young age when he would read works by Umezu Kazuo and Koga Shinichi. He grew up in the countryside and his home was notably rather reminiscent of a setting from a horror story with a bathroom that was located at the end of an underground tunnel, right where spider crickets lived. Itou started off as a dentist in 1984, and drew manga as a hobby. He started his career as a mangaka in 1987 when he submitted a short story to Gekkan Halloween, which got honorable mention in the Kazuo Umezu Prize, a panel that included his idol Umezu himself. Itou then expanded on this short story to create his first serial manga, Tomie. From that point on, he became a highly prolific mangaka, creating both short stories and serial manga. He is known for his dark and surreal horror stories, which often revolve around regular people who are thrust into inexplicable and dangerous situations. These situations often include attacks by grotesque monsters or other supernatural forces and being psychologically compelled to make self-destructive decisions. Besides his love of horror, Itou is also known for his love of cats, to the point that he went against his usual fare and created a lighthearted autobiographical slice of life story called Itou_Junji_no_Nekko_Nikki:_Yon_&_Muu. He has been married to picture book author Ishiguro Ayako since 2006.
