In the early Ninja Gaiden games, he wears a blue ninja uniform that covers his face. In the first three Dead or Alive games, he wears a black uniform and a headband. He leaves his face exposed in this form. His default costume from the first XBOX Ninja Gaiden onwards, is a sleeveless black ninja suit that emphasizes his muscular physique. He also covers the lower half of his face at nearly all times. He is the head of the Hayabusa clan, which is in charge of protecting the Dragon Sword, and one of the most powerful ninjas in his universe. He is famous for his Izuna Drop move which he uses in both Dead or Alive and the Xbox Ninja Gaiden games. The move involves him launching his opponent into the air, then Ryu teleports and catches the opponent in mid-air and does a spinning piledriver to the ground. In Ninja Gaiden 2, the effects of the move are even more devastating and can cause the victim's head to explode. He frequently takes on technologically advanced enemies and supernatural monsters with bows, arrows, shurikens, and ninja powers and still comes out on top. He is a serious and stoic young man. His formidable fighting skills have made him well known throughout the Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive universe and government agents often seek his aid to deal with particularly deadly threats. Although he has worked with covert US government agencies on some of his adventures, he tends to distrust them except for Irene Lew/Sonia who he is in a romantic relationship with, and Robert T. Sturgeon who he is friends with. He is also good friends with Hayate. He spends the majority of the Ninja Gaiden games with his face obscured with a mask, but he has brown hair; his full face is never shown in the first two XBox Ninja Gaiden games and the Sigma rerelease. From Dead or Alive 4 onwards, Ryu wears his XBox Ninja Gaiden outfit as a default costume. He also appears as a playable character from Musou_Orochi_2 onwards. In the Dead or Alive games, he does not use any weapons during gameplay and fights hand to hand like everyone else. He also seems to be holding back for the most part as he does not use some of the more powerful abilities he has in the Ninja Gaiden games. In the Ninja Gaiden games, he has a wide variety of weapons and techniques at his disposal. He is voiced by Hori_Hideyuki in all the video games with voice acting and Nanba_Keiichi in the OVA.
